Davido supports women having secret bank accounts from their husbands

Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said he sees nothing wrong with a woman having a private or secret bank account that her husband does not know about, arguing that everyone should have some financial independence.

Davido made the remarks during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast, where he was asked whether he supported women having secret bank accounts from their husbands.

The singer responded positively, saying he believed women should have such financial arrangements. He, however, clarified that the idea should not apply only to women, arguing that men should also have their own private finances.

Davido said, “I think it’s good, I actually think you should.”

Davido further suggested that having personal financial resources could be useful because life can be unpredictable. He said he would not necessarily be angry if he discovered that his wife had a secret account.

“If I ever found out my wife had a secret bank account, I would never have like… Yeah. You’d probably top it up. Maybe,” he said.

He also broadened the discussion beyond bank accounts, saying that everyone should have something of their own.

“I think everybody should have their own secret thing they are doing, to be honest,” Davido added.

Davido says his wife handles his finances

Davido’s comments are particularly notable because he has previously spoken publicly about the role his wife, Chioma, plays in managing his finances.

In July 2026, the singer said his wife handles his money because he considers himself a reckless spender. The comments came after he contacted Chioma while requesting money for one of his associates.

He insisted, “Of course, you know I’m a reckless spender. Na she dey arrange everything. Na my life coordinator be that,”

His latest remarks therefore appear to reflect his broader view that couples can share financial responsibilities while still maintaining some level of personal financial independence.

Davido’s comments have also renewed discussion about whether married couples should maintain completely joint finances or retain some money separately.

While he specifically responded to the idea of a secret bank account, his comments emphasized personal financial security rather than suggesting that one partner should deliberately deceive the other.

A report by Benin Web TV similarly described Davido’s position as support for couples having separate bank accounts, noting that he extended the principle to both men and women.

For married couples, however, whether private finances are appropriate often depends on the level of trust, financial responsibilities and agreements between partners.
